The Art of Metacognition
“So when we use the word 'meditation' we do not mean something that is practiced. We have no method. Meditation means awareness: to be aware of what you are doing, what you are thinking, what you are feeling, aware without any choice, to observe, to learn. Meditation is to be aware of one's conditioning....Out of this awareness comes attention, the capacity to be completely attentive. Then there is freedom to see things as they actually are, without distortion. The mind becomes unconfused, clear, sensitive."

"Metacognition" is a compound word, made up of the Greek, μετα, meaning "above" or "beyond" and the Latin, Cognoscere, meaning "to grasp knowledge of", "to understand", or simply "to know." Together, "metacognition", means being aware of one's own mental processes, to step above or beyond our knowing and asses the very things that lead up to that knowing. This program is invested in perfecting the practice of thinking about our thinking or knowing about our knowing. Its focus is not on epistemology per se, but on learning and more specifically, the learning process.
The Art of Metacognition is a workshop, where we will address what goes on in the background as we learn. This means things as simple as asking, Why and How we Read, Why and How we Write, Why and How we have Conversations.
In addition, we will have readings that discuss the value of a liberal arts education, opposing views, and philosophies on the nature of learning.
